NEW elementary students: register and prove residency by May 1 to Ensure Your Child(ren) Can Attend Your Neighborhood School

On Monday, March 26, the Board of Education passed Policy 5120: Assignment within District. This allows the district to assign resident students who register and enroll after May 1 to schools within GPPSS other than their neighborhood schools and is projected to save between $300,000 and $500,000 annually. The details of this important change are included in Administrative Guideline 5120. Key points include:

If a family establishes residency and completes enrollment by May 1st, its student(s) will be assigned to their neighborhood school (no change from current practice).  You can guarantee that your child will attend their neighborhood school by establishing residency and completing the enrollment process by May 1st.

If you enroll your child post May 1st and their school is full, they will be assigned to another elementary near your neighborhood school.  Parents will be provided choices regarding where their child will attend if their neighborhood school does not have space for their child(ren).

This only impacts families with NEW students (transfers, kindergarten, etc.) not those whose children are already enrolled in our elementary schools.

Please read Administrative Guideline 5120 for details, or call 313-432-3016 with questions. The Residency Office is open 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 8 a.m.-3:30p.m. Friday for walk-ins. A list of required documents to verify residency is on the website. Call 313-432-3083 if you need to schedule an appointment outside these hours

ATTENTION:  FAMILIES OF CURRENT FIFTH AND EIGHTH GRADE STUDENTS

The Board of Education feels strongly about enforcing our residency requirements and not opening our district to School of Choice options. Rather than incur the cost of a total district re-registration, the administration is again performing a total re-verification of students entering sixth and ninth grades next fall. Families who have already verified their address this school year due to an address change are exempt from this process.

Atwww.gpschools.org under the Residency button you will find a list of the documents required for this process. You must bring all the required original documents with you.  We encourage you to come to the Administration Building at 389 St. Clair Avenue, Grosse Pointe before August1. The office hours are: 8 a.m.- 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 8 a.m.-3:30 p.m. on Friday.  Questions may directed to Joi Neely at313-432-3083, option 2.

Class assignments will not be shared in August if you have not completed this re-verification process. Please remember, that only one parent/legal guardian must reside within the district for their child to legally attend our schools. Students found to be attending without meeting residency requirements, are removed immediately. This is one more method to assure our community that the children in our buildings are our students.

Summer Learning Program - Click for Info: High School (9th-12th)

As you know, the 9th-12th grade courses offered through the GPPSS Summer Learning program provide students meaningful opportunities to earn credit and/or grade enhancement. Unfortunately, since the summer of 2015, the enrollment in 9th thru 12th grade courses has steadily decreased (~250 in 2015and ~170 in 2017), causing the district to cancel courses at the last minute and ultimately lose approximately $58,000/year over the last three summers.

Therefore, due to budgetary constraints and an effort to maximize our resources, the district will no longer offer 9th thru 12th grade summer school sessions in Grosse Pointe. Instead, we will partner with St. Clair Shores Adult and Community Education (SCSACE) to provide opportunities for our high school students to earn credit through their 2018 summer programing. Over the years, our students have attended courses offered through SCSACE when we've had to cancel courses due to low enrollment.  There will be a variety of online courses (Odysseyware replaces Michigan Virtual) and regular seat-time courses offered to ensure students reach their established goals.  These courses will be offered at Kennedy Middle School in St. Clair Shores.  SCSACE virtual Odysseyware online courses meet 1x/week with a teacher and Odysseyware online courses aswell as regular seat-time courses meet 4x/week with a teacher.

Additionally, through this partnership, SCSACE will also offer the following courses (pending sufficient enrollment) at a satellite location:  Algebra I CP, Algebra II CP, Geometry CP and Odyssey warecourses.  The 2018 satellite location will be at Grosse Pointe North High School.

Classes will be held Monday through Thursday with optional Friday help sessions on July 13th, 20th, and 27th.  Class sessions begin on Monday, June 25th and end on Thursday, August 2nd. Courses will not be in session July 2-5 due to the 4th of July holiday.
