The Time is Now to Register for School!

An Update on Policy 5120

April 5, 2018

NEW elementary students: register and establish residency by May 1 to Ensure Your Child(ren) Can Attend Your Neighborhood School

On  Monday, March 26, the Board of Education passed Policy 5120 Assignment within District. This allows the district to assign resident students who register and enroll after May 1 to schools within GPPSS other than their neighborhood schools. This efforst is projected to save between $300,000 and$500,000 annually.

The details of this important change are included in Administrative Guideline 5120.

Key points include:

  • If a family establishes residency and completes enrollment by May 1st, its student(s) will be assigned to their neighborhood school (no change from current practice).  You can guarantee that your child will attend their neighborhood school by establishing residency and completing the enrollment process by May 1st.
  • If you enroll your child post May 1st and their school is full, they will be assigned to another elementary near your neighborhood school.  Parents will be provided choices regarding where their child will attend if their neighborhood school does not have space for their child(ren).
  • This only impacts families with NEW students (transfers, kindergarten, etc.) not those whose children are already enrolled in our elementary schools.

Please read Administrative Guideline 5120 for details, or call 313-432-3016 with questions. The Residency Office will be open over Spring Break 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday throughThursday, and 8 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Friday for walk-ins. A list of required documents to verify residency is on the website. Call 313-432-3083 if you need to schedule an appointment outside these hours.
